Tasmania Leads the IoT Way

TasmaNet, in conjunction with Thinxtra, have announced that they will be rolling out IoT sensors, available to 95% of the state's population by the end of 2017.

Tasmania has taken a huge leap in the right direction, as TasmaNet and Thinxtra joined together to build an Internet of Things (IoT) network that will cover 95% of the state’s population by the end of the year.

The IoT infrastructure will be used mainly to help the growth of Tasmania’s agricultural industry, enabling technologies like smart meters, temperature probes and GPS trackers for agriculture assets.

The joint venture between the two organisations will aim at building 55 communication towers across the Apple Isle by October 2017.

TasmaNet’s Managing Director, Joel Harris, believes that this announcement will inevitably lead to progress for Tasmania’s technology-led change.

“I cannot understate how big this is for Tasmania – it’s going to be huge,” he exclaimed.

The IoT technology works most efficiently on low bandwidth connections as it can send quick, short messages to connected devices, like the temperature of a specific farm, or the location of a product.

Sam Sharief, Network Deployment Director for Thinxtra, emphasised that the Sigfox-based network will be perfect for the requirements of the Tasmanian environment.

“Our low cost, low power, long range IoT network is perfect for deploying simple solutions to make cities smarter, agriculture more sustainable and industry more cost efficient. It can also be used for better monitoring of the exceptional Tasmanian environment, and provide solutions to reduce bush fires or control the quality of water in lakes and rivers,” he said.

The ambitions don’t stop there for TasmaNet either, as Harris is looking at methods for more community based IoT technology like wearables for care givers to be able to easily track their patient’s whereabouts.

Furthermore, he envisions that TasmaNet will also introduce low cost, or hopefully free, equipment in schools so that they can learn to code and develop their own IoT sensors which can use for their own purposes.
